This is a great kit to help you build your electronics knowledge, plus when you're done building it you'll have a product that you'll actually use. No effort has been spared in designing a nice product.
The sign has 96 different characters, and can store messages up to 232 characters long. The messages are stored in memory even after power-down, so it'll be there when you turn it back on. The scroll rate is adjustable to 8 different speeds (inluding stopped) and you can manually scroll using the left and right buttons.
We've worked very hard to provide an intuitive 4-button interface that lets you enter messages quickly. You can also connect it directly to your computer and type in messages with your keyboard. Electronics enthusiasts will find this device a great tool when connected to another microcontroller.
This kit comes with all the parts you need to build a very cool scrolling LED sign, inluding a professional quality double sided circuit board, a programmed microcontroller (this kit is based on Microchip's PIC16 MCU), and high brightness red LED displays (the image below gives no credit to the brilliant bright red). We even include extra parts to let you adjust the display brightness (and power consumption). A 5-9V 120mA power source is required. The kit includes a plug that can be soldered to any power wires (say, from a battery or old wall adapter). We also sell a power supply separately that already has the right plug on it.
Below is a link to the color laser-printed instructions included with the kit. Please note: We recently changed some of the parts in this kit. If you would like to check which kit you have, look at the shift registers. Our older kits contain 74AC164 registers, whereas our newer kits contain 74HC164. Also provided is an example assembly code file for those interested in learning how to program microcontrollers (neither this file nor knowledge of assembly code is required to build and operate the kit). This file can be read/modified/assembled using Microchip's MPLAB IDE software, available at their website. This is not the full source code - the example assembly code simply configures the microcontroller for basic operation and shows how to turn on a few pixels. Please note that we will not provide the original source code or hex file for the MLS Kit. If you intend to write your own programs we recommend that you get some other microcontrollers to play around with, so you can keep the original intact. If you overwrite the firmware on the original microcontroller the only way we can help is by selling you another one.
